Sanjida O'Connell's historical novel, "Sugar Island," is the story of a beautiful and talented British actress who is led into marriage to an American southerner on he eve of the civil war. Although Emily knows her husband owns a plantation worked by slaves and she is a firm abolitionist, she has no idea of the magnitude of the horror that is slavery.

On the plantation she discovers the depth of her husband's violent nature and his domination which he believes is appropriate for women and wives. She cannot accept the traditional role of passive wife without voicing her opinion of slavery - this is also true for her ideas about slavery -- which she bravely announces to her neighbors earning their hostility. Over the next years, she bears a child, comes to form relationships with house slaves and learns of the sexual liberties that owners force upon their property. As the north prepares for war, Emily is trapped yet unable to leave her husband without their baby daughter who has become the only pleasure left in her life.

As the plot heightens, with the aid of a family abolitionist friend, Emily must begrudgingly leave the south if only to take her baby to safety in the north.
While most of the characters in the story are cardboard, author O'Connell's development of Emily is first rate as we observe her trying to maintain her own belief systems in a foreign land and a husband capable of horrifying cruelty to other human beings, not excepting his wife.

In addition to a carefully designed and worked out plot, the narrative is helped by author O'Connell's use of figurative language. The following example is but one sample of dozens you'll find in this well-written novel.

"They walked in silence the rest of the way to the boat. The slaves rowed them back, singing softly. The navy sky was streaked with plum and brilliant with stars. Phosphorescence dripped from the oars and swirled livid turquoise through the water. A water rail they disturbed in the reeds snorted like a small pig and Emily jumped and then burst out laughing. She reached out her hand to Charles, who took it like a thirsty man, pulling her towards him and wrapping his arms around her."
