When it comes to historical fiction, Cornwell is one of the best, and the Warlord Chronicles is my favorite of his numerous series. I have read and re-read this trilogy to the point of the books falling apart. Few characters like Arthur and Merlin capture the imagination in such a powerful way, and to have it written as if it could have actually happened, is far more interesting than some fantasy story.

The Audio book is simply stunning. Because there are no movies or established voices based on this book, Jonathan Keeble is free to bring them to life with no pre-conceived notions of what they should sound like. And he NAILS it. It helps that the writing style is done as a first person narrative, as it lets Mr. Keeble take what could be flat narration, and make that an integral part of the story. He uses his voice to convey the emotions of Derfel (main character), and make you truly believe this is an old man telling his story.

I highly recommend this, particularly to those of you that have already read and loved the books.

When I started this book I wasn't sure I wanted to read about Arthur again, but I had started the Saxon Tales series and really like them, so I thought I'd give these a try. I'm glad I did. Unlike the other romantic tales of Arthur and the knights of the round table, this so much more realistic. The characters are really believable and it feels like you are actually reading history, not some made up tale. Historians believe Arthur may have actually been a king in what is now Wales
and this story makes it really believable.
I must confess that the first time I picked this book up I got a bit bogged down in the names and places. There just wasn't quite enough familiarity to help me keep them straight. So I put it down for a few months. Then I picked it up again and, for some reason, things went much faster. I do think it gets off to a slightly slow start, however, this is necessary to set the stage. I've already started the second book in the series and it pretty much jumps right back into the action. If you're looking for a very fresh take on the King Arthur legends, this book should be right up your alley. The narrator is a fascinating character all by himself, and the rest of the crew (both familiar and new) are complex, compelling characters that make you love them and hate them in turn. There is lots of action here in the form of battles. That's not usually my thing, but these are well written enough to keep my interest. If you DO like battles, you're going to be deliriously happy with this book. A gem!
I bought the Arthur Trilogy because I have recently become a fan of Bernard Cornwell (picked up 1356 on a whim and was hooked). Most people are familiar (and love) the 'classical' Arthur legend. I am one of them. I was very slow to embrace Cornwell's representation. This story does not follow the recipe of other Arthurian tales. The reader has to get past that 'prejudice' to finally enjoy and appreciate the tale as Cornwell spins it. The Winter King is book one (of 3) and mostly takes the reader back to life in mid- 5th century southern England. Cornwell does a great job of representing the life, times and struggles of the populace while introducing us to his version of some familiar character - Uther Pendragon, Merlin, his sister Morgan (I have always known her as Morgana) and others. The story is told by Derfel Cadarn - an aged monk who lived the story as a soldier and confidant of Arthur and the other principle characters. Arthur does not make an entrance until the last chapters. This story has a ring of immediacy and reality to it.. through all 3 novels. The leading characters are - mostly - far from the noble folk in classic tales of Arthur's times and struggles.

You may find this story a bit difficult at first because it is Not a comfortable one based on your expectations.
However, once you set aside those prejudices and become immersed in this tale of England leading up to 500 AD, you will love the adventure.
Outstanding novel for any fan of military style historical fiction or fantasy fiction. Mr. Cornwell does a great job of molding the myth of Arthur into the history of the time. The novel has interesting complex characters with all of the alliances between the kingdoms of southern England. As the series title implies, it in a lot of ways tell the story of the dark ages warlords in the years after the Roman Empire withdrew and then fell. The battle scenes are fantastic. Any fan of Lord of the Rings or Game of Thrones should really enjoy this.

Best book that I have read in about two years. I would recommend the paperback as it has a really good middle ages map of England in the back of the Winter King. Wish it was in the front as I was through 60% of the book before I found it.

This was my first Cornwell novel, but I thought he was a great writer as well as a great storyteller.
I started reading Cornwell's Viking series and read every one of those books. Then I bought all the Arthurian books and loved them as well. Right now I'm on his civil war series. If you like historical fiction, there's no one that does it better. Full of good writing and excellent battles. I plan to buy all the Sharpe books when I'm done with what I'm currently reading. If you're looking for comparisons...I'd say similar to Conn Iggulden
I haven't been taking time to review books much lately, but I will make an exception for this one. What a great story! It's definitely a twist on the traditional Arthur story, but that keeps it interesting. His characters are really well developed and interesting, and his description of settings and place is phenomenal. I saw so many reviews about how well he writes his battle scenes, and I remember thinking... aren't all battle scenes pretty much the same? Not with this author. He does a great job of making you think about some of the realities of warfare.

I picked this up when I saw that George RR Martin recommends him, and he was completely right! The rest of this trilogy is just as good, and I cannot wait to read the rest.
