Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants Book 1 Ann Brashares Books

I am an English teacher and needed to pick a book for my next class semester. I did a google search, found this book and read it. It is a good book for girls, I would say they should be late teenagers before reading, only because one story line is about a 15 year old girl trying to seduce an older boy to sleep with her (I won't give it away...).

I liked the story and the characters. Its a good "coming of age" story that focuses on 4 different story lines for the 4 girls who will spend their first summer apart. The writing was good, though the author choose to bounce back and forth between the 4 stories in mid chapter, with no warning and it was a little jarring to then figure out where you are and with who. I cared about the characters by the end and wanted to see how their stories ended. I thought Carmen's father got off the hook too easily (my father also left under similar circumstances) and one girl falls for a boy that she doesn't really know, so it was a little unrealistic. Over all, a good read.

I will try the book with my 300 College girl students (its an English college program to get the Chinese girls jobs teaching English, Chinese and translation). We will see if they can handle it, the words might be above their level... but if they can get it, it might be the first English fiction book they've ever read and I'd say the story will be worth the work...

Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants Book 1 Ann Brashares Books Reviews

Tibby works at Wallman’s drug store. Lena goes to Greece with her grandmother. Bridget attends a soccer camp in Baja, California. Carmen flies to South Carolina for some quality time with her dad. These four best friends have to spend their first summer apart, but keep in touch through heart-felt letters and a magic pair of jeans. This book’s emphasis on strong, supportive girl friendships inspires readers. Ann Brashares cleverly tells the stories of the trying teenage years. Each girl learns something new about herself and her friends in this amazing novel.
There are some very valuable lessons to be learned from The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants. It shows that friendship endures all, and different personalities can deepen bonds. Brashares explains that happiness “isn't having everything in your life be perfect… it's about stringing together all the little things” (Brashares). Being a teenage girl myself, I found it easy to connect and relate to each of the characters. Every girl can find a little bit of herself in the sisterhood. Not only are the characters well-developed, and human, Brashares doesn't give them more wisdom than any other fifteen-year-olds would have. The characters live their lives as real teenagers, and delve into human emotions that all women have experienced at some point.
I really enjoyed the point of view of this book. While in the beginning it was sometimes hard to follow, it was very interesting. It was third person point of view, but jumped between each of the girls’ personal experiences. The author also throws in the notes that each girl mails throughout the course of the summer, giving insight on their thoughts and feelings. I would definitely recommend this book to friends and family; it’s truly a great read.
I really enjoyed reading this book! It's great and relatable for many young girls, and accurately portrayed my high school life, so I saw a lot of my younger self in these girls. At first I didn't think I would like it because I'm in college and it seemed like a younger book, but I actually really enjoyed it.It was written from a third person limited omniscient point of view which worked really well for the story because we could focus on each girl's individual struggle.
This book is about four fifteen year old wildly different best friends being away from each other for the first time in their lives, for a whole summer. TIbby (brooding and sarcastic) stays home and works, Lena (shy and artistic) goes to visit her grandparents in Santorini, Bridget (adventurous and overconfident) who goes to a soccer camp in Baja, and Carmen (sassy and somewhat insecure) who visits her dad in South Carolina. They share a close bond, and face different challenges throughout the book, along with struggling with their own individual identities, but they come together to help resolve the issues. They send back and forth a pair of jean pants which fits all of them, even though they have different body types. The pants bridge the gap between the girls.
I loved the book, and I was laughing at almost every page. It was an easy read, but the storyline was awesome. The girls were all very different, but their friendship made sense at the same time. I think this book does accurately display a high school friendship, and the struggle for independence.I really liked that each chapter started with a different quote that usually reflected upon what the characters would be going through in that chapter.
The authors writing style was very easy to read, but it had such a cute storyline. I liked how she made each girl so different that we knew who we were reading about without her telling us. I really loved it, and I strongly recommend it to anyone who reads young adult novels and likes magical pants!
