Death at Victoria Dock was a quick read and a nice bit of escapist fun. Phryne Fisher is beautiful, rich, quick-witted, brave, and irreverent, and lives in 1920's Australia. In this tale, she's drawn into anarchist circles by driving down the wrong road at the wrong time. Shots hit her car, and when she stops she sees two men fleeing the scene, and a wounded young man lying in the road, who bleeds his last into her silk shirt.

Not one to suffer indignities gladly, Fisher sets out to avenge her ruined possessions and the death of a beautiful young man. This leads her to the morgue, a tattoo parlor, dubious pubs and parties, and satisfying bedroom encounters with a mysterious Latvian. Along the way she takes, and solves, the case of a missing schoolgirl. And she tries to convince the police to head off a deadly bank robbery being planned by some anarchists who have obtained a machine gun.

Greenwood populates Fisher's world with nicely assorted characters, and keeps the plot(s) moving nicely.

This was the first Phryne Fisher book I've read. The book jacket flap says that there are lots more books in the series, and I'm off to the public library in search of them.

I was actually introduced to this series of cozy mysteries, after I watched the "Miss Fisher Murder Mysteries" television series, which was based upon these books by author Kerry Greenwood. I loved the television series, and the books have not disappointed. This is the fourth book in the series, featuring our fearless flapper, the Honorable Phryne (rhymes with bring) Fisher. Talking place in late 1920s Melbourne, Australia, the books are a fun, fast read.

Feisty, fashionable, and fearless, Phryne is caught in a hailstorm of bullets one night, while out and about in her bright red Hispanico-Suiza. Having survived the onslaught, Phryne discovers that a young man has not been so lucky and vows to discover who the killers are. This question lead her to a den of anarchists who will stop at nothing to achieve their goals. In Phryne, as they will soon discover, they will have more than met their match.

Those who enjoy cozy mysteries will find much to enjoy in this series of period cozy mysteries. Not only do the books sustain their authenticy of time and place, they do not fail to entertain.
Overall, I will give each book in the Phryne Fisher series basically the same comments. A friend introduced me to the series by author Kerry Greenwood and I enjoyed them all. They are light and fairly fast reading tho the plot can get a bit slow in parts. The books themselves are "thin" so you feel as if you won't be spending hours getting halfway through the plot. The heroine, Ms. Fisher, is a funny, clever, and quick-witted character with a vocabulary to match (i.e., have you ever heard of "cami-knickers?" o). The beginning chapters mention how she got to where she is (i.e., a wealthy and influential socialite who is also a self-proclaimed investigator), but it's quick and clean, unlike so many books where entire chapters are taken up reviewing the backstory to the book. Consequently, you don't have to read each book sequentially, though when changes happen, such as a marriage or death, the author spends time in character and plot development. If you feel that you must have this background, then read them in sequence, but as stated earlier, this isn't mandatory. In summary, this is an enjoyable series of books that won't take a lot of time or brain power with many characters and multiple plot twists - just a good, 'ol fashioned time reading!
In nearly every instance when a movie or show is based on a book the book is better. With the Phryne Fisher series that isn't the case. The program (currently with 3 seasons and soon a full length movie?) is so much better than the books in every regard. Plotting, pacing etc is much better as it is handled by the producers/directors of Miss Fisher's Mysteries than the books (of which I've now read almost a dozen). The book's plots meander and jump from one situation to the next rather than weaving subplots into the main plot.
Also, the handling of the characters (Dot, Cec, Bert, Dr. Mac, Collins and Jack) is more pleasing in the programs than the books. In the books Dot is frequently heard to say 'ain't' but never in the shows; that's just one example. The author has come up with a delightful character in Phryne, but the writers of the series handle her and the others much better in my opinion.
Published in 1992, Kerry Greenwood’s DEATH AT VICTORIA DOCK is fourth in the author’s mystery series featuring Phryne Fisher—an incredibly wealthy young woman whose daredevil temperament leads her to work as a private detective in 1920s Australia. In this particular book, Phryne runs afoul of a ring of anarchists and at the same time investigates the mysterious disappearance of a school girl.

Greenwood often runs parallel plots in these novels—and it feels very formula, and it reminds me a bit of the teen reader Nancy Drew series, in which Nancy and her father typically conduct overlapping investigations. In this book, the main plot about anarchists actually feels less interesting than the secondary plot about the missing school girl. Even so, the characters are flashy, the pace is solid, and the writing is very good. Fans who come to the novels from the popular television series, however, are in for a surprise Detective Jack Robinson does not feature much in the novels, and the stories are quite a bit harsher on the page than they are on the screen. Entertaining.
